Timeline of the Radio

The radio is one of the most important technologies invented in the last 3 centuries. It made the entertainment industry and music industry more accessible and allowed communication between people to be broader.

1900 â€" Tesla was granted the U.S. patent for transmitting electrical energy and an electrical transmitter.

1900 - Reginald Fessenden sends a weak transmission over the airwaves.

1901 - In the transatlantic, Marconi conducted the first successful radio communication from Canada to Great Britain.

1902 - The Poulson Arc transmitter is created â€" converts direct current electricity into radio frequency alternating current.

1904 - The U.S patent office reverses the decision to award Tesla for the patent award and awarded it to Marconi for the invention of the radio.

1905 â€" British engineer, Sir John Fleming, invented the first vacuum diode, which he called an oscillating valve. This value detects radio waves and amplifies signals.

1906 â€" Lee deforest creates the three-element vacuum tube called the Audion expanding on Fleming’s invention.

December 1906 â€" On Christmas Eve, professor Reginald Fessenden transmitted a voice and music program in the Massachusetts that spread as far as Virginia.

1910 â€" The Wireless Ship Act was passed by the U.S. Congress; all ships in the United States traveling over two-hundred miles off the coast and carrying over sixty passengers are equipped with wireless radio equipment.

1912 â€" The Titanic sank. It contacted many other ships via wireless radio while in distress. Wireless telegraphy transmitters became mandatory on large ships. The Radio Act of 1912 required all sea vessels to maintain 24-hour radio watch and keep in contact with nearby ships and coastal radio stations.

1919 â€" The Radio Corporation of America was established after the patent control was released.

1920 â€" The first radio news program was broadcast and several radio stations claimed to be the first public radio station.

1933 â€" FM radio was created by Edwin Howard Armstrong providing a static-free broadcast. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to broadcast over the radio.

1937 - W1XOJ in Massachusetts is the first FM radio station.

1943 â€" The U.S. Supreme Court reverses the patent for Marconi.

1950 â€" Radios begin to focus on playing records due to the invention of the television.

1954 â€" The pocket radio is introduced.

1963 â€" The Teslar satellite - the first radio satellite - is launched into space by NASA.

1994 â€" The first radio station was broadcast over the Internet.

1999 â€" Sirius satellite radio is founded.
